“I don’t go by the rule book…I lead from the heart, not the head”. Princess Diana
The palace walls shook and for good reason. Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj released the official remix to “Princess Diana”, titled “Princess Diana Remix”. The unlikely musical union we didn’t know we needed. But that is the beauty of a talent like Nicki Minaj, she can direct and redirect the musical conversation at will. Ice Spice didn’t get the privilege of being touted as “real”, she had to actually engage her audience while making music that popped organically. And that she has done, making her rise to fame that more intriguing and enjoying to watch. “Princess Diana” was released January 2023 on Ice Spice’s debut EP, “Like…?” and she has been on the rise ever since. But before we get too deep, give a round of applause to RiotUSA for the production and beat on “Princess Diana Remix”!!! It is pure melodic fire.
Dubbed the People’s Princess, Ice Spice is catapulting into the upper echelon of musical superstardom. With a laid back and easy approach to the RiotUSA produced track, her flow pulls you in instantly. Ice Spice has beencaptivating audiences stateside and abroad with her girl next door appeal and classic charm. Which makes Nicki Minaj featuring on “Princess Diana Remix” much more electrifying and iconic. Minaj brings a certain bravado that boosts the laid back persona of Ice Spice. It also proves the power of a Nicki Minaj co-sign. I saw female artist recently say the co-sign is no longer needed as we are in the digital age and anyone can make music. I beg to differ, a co-sign from the right person can open doors you never knew existed.

Nicki Minaj is aware of that as she raps “Nowadays, I be makin them famous - She the Princess, so fuck who you lames is”. She is acknowledging the power of her co-sign and engagement while reinforcing Ice Spice’s place within the female rap diaspora as the People’s Princess. Minaj also raps “They burned they London bridges/none of them btchs British”, is a metaphorically heavy bar and I have 3 different reference points Nicki could’ve been referring to. In a nutshell she is saying, I won’t help you repair the bridge you burnt with me (Rebuilding Act of London 1666). Unlike London (no flags), the relationship with me can’t be recovered or rebuilt.

The different flows coupled with Nicki’s enunciation and diction is what makes “Princess Diana Remix” verse a standout. Nicki knocked her verse out of the ballpark. There isn’t one female rapper that can elevate a song the way Nicki can and that isn’t talked about enough for me and I think we know why.
The willful blindness of the industry when it comes to Nicki and her impact is coming to an end. The radio host and DJ may lie but the numbers don’t.
