Nicki Minaj Gag City Tour Sparks A Global Pink Phenomenon

Perseverance. “When you are trying to hurt people and pull them down, be careful. You don't know what life has in store. Now I’m the most successful I have ever been.” Nicki Minaj

The Phoenix rises from its own ashes as a symbol of rebirth and immortality. A metaphor for conquering obstacles and facing trials with steadfastness; knowing She will rise above it all with the reverence of the people. Having endured years of orchestrated hate, She has risen and is soaring high above those that sought to mock and destroy. Spreading her wings so all can see the gloriousness of what has been nurtured from the fire. Soaring even higher than before, while looking upon those that loved her amid the battle and those who erroneously believed they were rejoicing in her wounds.

She rises to show the full magnitude of her perseverance, humility, and determination. The unbridled passion that is etched in her heart for music would not allow her to give up as She fought against every battle waged in her name. Every tongue that spoke ill of her and every hand that engaged in misdeeds against her will lose more than She ever did. And no, that’s not karma. Karma is belief in circumstance, what is happening within the industry and its pond of frogs is called restitution. Whether it is by man’s law or divine law, you will always pay for what you steal.

With the release of “Pink Friday 2,” Minaj’s fifth studio album debuted at #1; reassuring the doubters of two things (a) She is in command and (b) She can’t be fucked with. Sending a seismic shock into female rap and the hip-hop landscape, Minaj breathed life by way of her musical artistry back into the culture. Anyone that says different is a hater and isn’t fit to be a part of hip-hop/rap discourse. Breaking streaming and pure sales records, PF2 made it clear to Roc Nation, Atlantic Records, RCA Records and the female rap unity crew (Remy Ma, Missy Elliott, *Dana Owens, the frog from down under, Trina , Lil Kim & more) that the Throne belongs to and only seats one, Nicki Minaj.

On March 1, 2024, Minaj kicked off her highly anticipated Gag City World Tour in Oakland Ca., to a sold-out arena. With top tier production, dazzling lights and jaw dropping custom couture fashion, Minaj sizzled in opulence. Giving fans more than just a medley of songs but an experience they bought into and breathed life in. The Pink Friday 2 World Tour has put a standard in place that no industry machine or envious record label can replicate or destroy with their pond of toads. Authenticity. As hard as Atlantic Records has tried to mold that low tier heavy tongued misfit into Nicki Minaj, they failed at every turn and every new face debut.

We have been witnessing since 2018, the rebirth of Nicki Minaj, hence my Phoenix references. A merging of the talent and the woman to become a standalone force to be reckoned with. In terms of impact and influence, there is no other female rapper that has impacted hip hop and the culture like her. A dynamic rapper who was able to parlay her talent into crossover success, while sharpening her rap skills amongst some of the most acclaimed and talented male rappers of this generation.

Let’s be clear, when Nicki came along in the early 2000’s, female rap was dead, and she resuscitated the sub-genre. Her razor-sharp lyricism, animated delivery, witty and thought provoking bars captivated all of us. Her presence became undeniable as she worked to cement herself as the best to ever do it.

Known for her iconic mixtape era (Beam Me Up Scotty, Playtime Is Ova and Sucka Free), Minaj did what no other female rapper had done before or after her; infused soft girl femininity into her raps while maintaining street credibility. Mixtapes from the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s are not to be confused with the microwave cash grabs we have today. It has become the norm for labels and executives to reclassify the albums of their underperforming and underwhelming female rappers as mixtapes to save face in the eyes of the general public.

Through creative ingenuity and mainstream acceptance, Minaj crossed over and stamped herself as a global icon. Maintaining her razor-sharp lyricism, she was able to create an avenue of versatility that would expand the female rap subgenre. And now every label wants her margin of the female rap fan base after they have fed the glamorized thug life to the black community resulting in the countless deaths of black male rappers.

We witnessed Minaj’s endurance as she took the arrows and daggers thrown at her from corporations using the face of a Bronx lizard to hide their hands. However, little did they know this would be the beginning of the resurgence of Nicki Minaj. Because through it all, She stood as tall as the Phoenix’s wings knowing She is who they want to be. And nevertheless, persevered.
